Asian Americans who think and write about counterculture ideas usually reside in the fringe and outside. Generally their work is not included in the scope of Asian American studies. These thinkers, who I dub as "the borderlands," are writing about subcultures that border/surround Asia America . Research in these fields seems to be excluded from Asia America. What role then does an Asian American scholar who does outsider research, have within Asian American studies? (I want to dissect and examine these individual "borderlands"--
